Zentury Spotlight – Google Is Working on the New Search Features

Google is Focusing on Project Magi

In addition to developing a “all-new search engine” that would be powered by its new A.I. technology, Google is also working on a project called Magi that will add new A.I.-based capabilities to its current search engine.

The release date for the new Google search engine remains unfamiliar, with the project still being in its early phases. Nevertheless, this fresh initiative “demonstrates Google’s ambitions to reimagine the search experience.”

The new features on the search engine would be able to understand what users want based on what they’re looking up for. According to that, it will list preselected options for objects to buy, information to research and more information.

According to the report, Magi will enable users to carry out activities like purchasing shoes or making travel arrangements. This would enable users to conduct financial transactions while retaining the current, profitable Google search ads.

Apart from Magi project, Google is also engaged in other projects, such as:

  • AI is used to assist in the improvement of Google Earth’s mapping technology, and a chatbot is used to search for music through a conversation.
  • Developing “GIFI” for generating AI images that appear in Google Image results.
  • Bringing Tivoli Tutor to help users learn a new language through open-ended AI text conversations.
  • Users of Searchalong could talk with a chatbot while using Google’s Chrome browser to search the internet.

Google Strongly Advised Against Cloaking HTTP Status Codes

During Google’s SEO Office Hours in April, Google’s analyst, Illyes, mentioned that cloaking HTTP Status Codes should be avoided, stating it is risky.

Cloaking is the act of displaying alternate material to users and search engines with the intention of tricking users and manipulating search results. Such actions include:

  • Search engines are shown a page about vacation spots, while humans are shown a page about cheap medications
  • Only adding text or keywords when a search engine, not a human visitor, is the user agent requesting the page

According to Illyes many potential problems could arise from multiple serving situations, with site’s de-indexation from Google being one of them.

When done on purpose, cloaking is interpreted as an attempt to trick search engine crawlers. Websites that use cloaking risk having their material de-indexed or having their rankings decline.

Illyes advises using a “noindex” robots meta tag instead to exclude particular pages from Google Search. Instead of creating potentially hazardous serving settings, this strategy is simpler and safer.

All the violations of Google’s policies can harm the appearance of your website. So, being open and truthful is the greatest method to satisfy both visitors and search engines, which will lead to improved rankings and user experiences.

Google’s Analysts on Surprising Keyword Ranking Drops

One of the discussions on Google’s SEO office hours in April 2023 was the sudden drop of keyword ranking.

One of the users was wondering if there are any chances that the site was deleted from SERP for one certain keyword. Page was indexed and the website was first in the ranking and noiw it is absent completely.

Google analyst, Illyes found this very uncommon, and stated that it is unlikely that the ranking was lost just for one keyword. In most cases you get out-ranked by others in search results if the reason for disappearance was one particular keyword.

He stated that if you noticed this happening, you should firstly check if this thing is happening globally. Check with your friends abroad what they see when they search your keyword. If the site appears then it was probably just a bug, or “glitch in the matrix” if you would like.

If your website does not appear in the search results by googling the keyword, then some past actions might lead to it. Illyes stated that few things could be checked, like:

  • Checking weather the internal link structure or page layout have been changed
  • Whether more links were acquired
  • If the disavow tool was used.

Such things might have an effect on ranking, so going through them might help you understand why the sudden ranking drop happened.

Google Adds New Updates:

Google Updated Product Structured Data Documentation

Google search results are now having new shipping and return information, and new properties apply only to merchant listing experiences, and not to product snippets.

According to Google, you can use the mentioned new properties to make your merchant listing eligible to display information about return policies, such as return costs and the time span for returns.

The suggested properties include:

  • merchantReturnDays, which indicate how many days a product can be returned after the delivery date
  • returnFees, this characteristic is only necessary if returning the item will not have any costs
  • returnMethod, this is only advised if you choose MerchantReturnFiniteReturnWindow or MerchantReturnUnlimitedWindow as the returnPolicyCategory.
  • returnShippingFeesAmount, represents the shipping cost for returning the product. If the cost is zero, you may just use returnFees property instead.

This update is crucial for brands selling online products and by adding the shipping and return details to your snippet, following with products price and reviews, you may gain visibility and attention. This, furthermore, may leave an impact on your click-through rate from Google Search.
